Why Toyota Supra is a BMW in a Japanese body? To the bottom of things, crawling under Supra

We’ve all seen the appearance of the Toyota Supra 2020. Some may like it, but someone seems boring, but actually it doesn’t matter. But what really has the weighty word of voices, as is the technical equipment of the new coupe. But how to see all that is hidden, if the automaker has not yet provided anyone access to its novelty? Right, see everything yourself, unashamedly and without straining, right on the auto show where the new model was first presented in Detroit. At least so did the American journalist from the website Jalopnik, his observations and photographs submitted in our spyware review, new Toyota Supra fifth generation.

Turns out sometimes to see all that is hidden, you have to crawl under the car. Well at least the car in this case is clean and fresh, nice to look! And, as it turned out, the Toyota Supra is very similar to the BMW Z4 and 3-Series, but all in good time.

Before we move on to components of the underbody, let’s quickly take a look at the engine Bay of the Supra:

There are some of the main visible components that tell us how similar the engine Bay on the Supra hood space M40i BMW Z4, a car which the Japanese model shares the platform and drivetrain. Probably, in this respect, it is not surprising that both versions look basically identical — well, apart from the engine cover and the lack of braces between the supports of the rack and the front radiator support Supra (at BMW they are). Almost all the same components located in the same places:

According to an American journalist. Which with the camera and the phone wiped the whole floor under the “Supra”, similar to the logos of BMW also is outside of the engine compartment. Note the General shape of the upper part of the engine compartment (this “partitioned” style under bonnet, BMW has been using for many years). Also look for one feature: expansion tank “ohlajdauche” and an electronic stability system are in the same location as on the Supra. Or rather, no, not on a Supra under the hood as well as all BMW:

Aerodynamic rails appear more or less similar to what we see on the new 3-Series themselves of the lower control arms look to some extent identical with the Bavarian variant:

“And actually, the new five-link suspension BMW 3-Series is marked by a sticker in the same place as the Supra. Moreover, the sticker with the same sequence number – “6886448”, although BMW this number should be “04” and on the Supra – “05”, I guess that’s all the difference”.

Go to the back of the Supra. Look at the rear differential, which, according to the Manager of product planning Toyota, Ben Haushalter, received dopolnitelny massive damper attached to the subframe just behind him. “I’m not really sure why it’s used, but I guess he’s here to prevent any unwanted vibration in the subframe”, guess English speaking browser:

This thing is a vanilla color on top of the foam NVH, and a little tray for the battery. Below you will notice a sticker on the frame—its location and General shape is very similar to the new BMW 3-Series, which is shown below:

You can also notice that both cars have a wire that is stretched down and connected with the lower part of the cover of the rear differential with the element of design that looks similar to the temperature sensor. On the other end of the 3-Series and the Supra you will see the same connector on the bracket located to the right of the differential.

Front suspension Supra is design is similar to the one that is on the BMW 3-Series. It in type double joint, strut. Looking at the knuckle, you will see one connection with a rack on top (this is better seen in the photo below) and two connections of the two levers at the bottom. This design gives the so-called virtual steering axis, as on the BMW “Troika”.

Note the sticker on the BMW lever, which extends to the front of the car. The same marking BMW on the other, side lever:

Here is a view of the rack, also in the frame is visible stabilizer bar and what seems is sensor wear indicator brake pads and height clearance (at Supra is an adaptive suspension called “Adaptive Variable Suspension”).

“Thus, sums up the progress up autoassist, the engine compartment is basically the same as Z4, and the suspension is probably too. I only had pictures of the suspension of the new “Third” Series, but they showed quite a lot in common between the Bavarian sedan and the new Supra”.

We knew that the Supra shares the platform and drivetrain with the BMW, but the main caveat, as it turned out, lies in the fact that, looking at the Supra, it’s pretty obvious that it’s largely a BMW when it comes to basic equipment. That is to say, iron. According to Haushalter that Toyota has really done is changed the settings of such things as steering and suspension damping.

There you have it. On the one hand they lost some personality, but despite the similarity of construction, it is designed in such a way that it can be a good idea to set. So to say to test drive that Supra will be managed identically to the “Troika” is unlikely.
