That’s why engine oil can get into the air filter
Top 3 reasons due to which engine oil can get into the air filter.
Motor oil should never get into the air filter. If this happens, it means that the car has fault. Depending on the reasons for the ingress of oil into the air filter and will be determined by the nature of car repair (minor or major).
Recall that the air filter is designed to trap debris, dirt and other particles that can get into the engine. That’s why it’s so important to frequently change air filter. And even if it seems clean enough. What kind of procedure replace the air filter in your car, you can look in the manual to a vehicle or in the service book.
If you often stand in traffic, regularly drive long distances on country roads, and live in regions where the air is smog from forest fires, burning grass, etc., it is desirable to reduce the frequency of air filter replacement as it becomes dirty in such conditions is much faster.
Usually engine oil is caught in the air filter is detected during IT in which, not only changes the engine oil/oil filter, but including the air filter. In principle, getting oil in the filter is not a sign of catastrophic failure of the engine. But it still cannot be neglected.
Work air filter
The air filter on most modern internal combustion engines located within the housing of the air intake, which is installed in the upper part of the engine. It is attached to the fuel injection system (or turbine). The air intake is designed for efficient transportation of air (oxygen) into the fuel system for mixing with the fuel, resulting in air-fuel mixture which subsequently enters the combustion chamber.
The main task of the air filter is to remove particles of dirt, dust, debris and other contaminants before the air mixes with the liquid gasoline (or diesel fuel). When the air filter is clogged with dirt, this can lead to increased fuel consumption and reduced power. If engine oil gets into the air filter, it also can significantly affect the performance of the motor. Let’s look at three main reasons, because of which the oil can flow into the air filter.
1. Clogged valve positive crankcase ventilation (PCV)
The PCV valve is connected to the chassis air inlet through the rubber vacuum hose that is often used to create a vacuum in the crankcase. This component is typically installed on top of the valve cover of the cylinder head where the pressure flowing from the lower half of the engine through the cylinder head and goes into the air intake.
The PCV valve, and air filter, eventually becomes clogged with excessive debris (in this case the valve is clogged engine oil). In this case, the vent valve crankcase gases must be replaced in accordance with the recommendations automaker of your car. If the PCV valve is not replaced in accordance with the recommendations, the excess oil will pass through the PCV valve and into the air intake system. In the air filter starts to become clogged with engine oil.
What to do? If it is determined that the cause of getting oil in the air filter is clogged the PCV valve, it should be replaced. You must also clean the intake and install a new air filter.
2. Worn piston rings
The second potential source of ingress of engine oil into the air filter housing is worn piston rings of the engine. Ring mounted on the outer edge of the pistons. Ring in the piston group play a very important role. Some rings hold the compression inside the motor. Other changes the film thickness of the engine oil in the combustion chamber during each stroke of the pistons. When the rings wear out, they weaken and can pass through the engine oil.
This usually leads to the appearance in the exhaust pipe for blue smoke. In the early stages of worn piston rings, excessive release of oil can cause excessive pressure inside the case, causing through the valve forced ventilation of blow-by gas begins to pass more oil. In the end, oil is getting into the intake and then into the air filter.
What to do? If you have noticed motor oil in the air filter housing or air intake, show the car to the mechanic. Perhaps your engine needs diagnostics. For example, you need to measure the engine compression to determine if the rings are worn. Mechanic, installing the compression gauge on each cylinder of the engine, check the compression of each of them. If the ratio is lower than it should be, then why get oil in the air filter – in wear of piston rings.
Unfortunately, this repair is not as simple as replacing the EGR valve blow-by gas. If your car has worn rings, you will appreciate the cost of repair of the engine. It is possible that you will not like the price tag. Especially for owners of older machines where the motor repair can cost much more than the cost of the entire car. In this case, it will be easier to sell the car and buy fresh.
3. Clogged oil passages
The last possible reason why engine oil gets into the intake system (which will eventually clog up pretty quickly even new air filter) – clogged oil channels of the engine.
This symptom usually occurs when the engine oil and oil filter has not been replaced in accordance with the technical regulations. That is, when the car is moved limit the mileage, which is needed to change the oil and filter.
If you will often to change motor oil is not a good time, inside the engine will begin to appear excessive carbon deposits and residue (especially inside the case). When the oil is not circulating inside the engine, as expected, pressurized engine oil, which leads to the expulsion of oil through the valve forced ventilation gases in the crankcase. The oil getting into the intake, is the air filter.
What to do? In this case, it is sufficient to change the engine oil and filter. Also want to replace the crankcase PCV valve and air filter. However, if the circulation of the engine oil caused by carbon deposits, it is recommended that before the Bay of new lubricant to flush the engine. And that’s not all.
Car mechanics suggest to replace the oil and filter several times every 1500-3000 miles to be sure that the oil deposits in the engine are gone. And oil change after a short period of time must pass after flushing the engine of old oil.
