Recall that there are two top rating IIHS:

Top Safety Pick

Top Safety Pick+

In order to qualify for Top Safety Pick (let’s call it a solid “4”), the vehicle must pass crash tests with “good” or “acceptable” scores, with predominance of the first:

“To qualify for the 2019 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must receive a rating of “good” in the tests on impact with a small overlap on the driver side, middle frontal collision and side impact. Tested the roof strength and head restraints. It is also necessary to obtain “acceptable” or “good” rating with a small overlap on the passenger side. Also must be received “advanced” or “superior” rating to prevent a frontal collision and an “acceptable” or “good” rating the headlights”, – konkretisiert in IIHS.

In 2018, the only such award has been awarded to 27 cars.

On “perfectly” passed the exam 30 cars, which quite remarkable, because in previous years it was always more cars with less high ratings. Automakers are increasingly paying attention to security, and it is very good.

“To be eligible for a maximum of 2019 Top Safety Pick +, a vehicle must receive “good” rating in tests for a small overlap on the driver side, the passenger in a frontal impact with a moderate overlap and side crash tests, as well as stand on the highest point of pressure on the roof and the headrest. The model also needs to earn “advanced” or “superior” ratings to prevent frontal collisions and good score on the rating of the headlights.

Vehicle with additional collision protection system in the front can get any award only in the presence of this technology” – added to the Insurance Institute.

Models that earn Top Safety Pick + or Top Safety Pick are the best choice of vehicles for safety in their respective categories. The size and weight influence occupant protection in serious crashes. Larger, heavier vehicles generally provide more protection than smaller, lighter ones. Thus, the small car that received a Top Safety Pick + or Top Safety Pick, not necessarily give more protection than a bigger car that gets the award among its competitors.
