Ferrari unveils new 2022 SP48 Unica supercar

Ferrari has unveiled the new SP48 Unica supercar, which will complete the One-off series and join the most exclusive group in the entire production of Maranello. This is a unique model, created and designed by the individual order of a specific client, the press service of the brand reports.

Developed by the Ferrari Design Center under the direction of chief designer Flavio Manzoni, the SP48 Unica is a two-seat sports berlinetta built on the F8 Tributo platform. Clean lines, an aggressive stance and swept-back front profile make the Berlinetta instantly recognizable from the original model. The main element in achieving this effect was the redesign of the headlights and the subsequent relocation of the brake air intakes.

A key aspect of the design of the new unique car is the extensive use of procedural parametric modeling and 3D prototyping (additive manufacturing), which has allowed Ferrari Styling Center designers and Maranello engineers to completely redesign the front grille and engine air intakes.

This advanced manufacturing process has resulted in perfect 3D grids that appear to be carved from a solid volume, creating a sense of seamless structure and fluid dynamics.

The procedural graphics on the bodywork interact directly with the grilles and influence the overall design of the SP48 Unica, with the transition from black, which includes the windows, roof and engine shroud, to body color being particularly noticeable. The striking effect of the visor at the front is enhanced by the downsizing of the side windows and the absence of a rear window. This emphasizes the powerful musculature of the SP48 Unica, which seems to be sculpted from a single piece of metal.

The top view highlights the center section of the roof, which includes a graphic of air intakes mounted in the rear of the carbon fiber engine in front of the rear wing. This angle captures the SP48 Unica’s stylish explorations and reveals the intricate interplay of symmetry and intersecting lines created by its shapes. The thermodynamic design of the SP48 Unica has been honed and refined to ensure that all cooling requirements are met, while maintaining aerodynamic balance.

The biggest changes from the F8 Tributo styling include air intakes for engine cooling on the front bumper and below the rear spoiler. Each of them has a deep treatment grill, the sections of which are located at an optimal angle to maximize the amount of air passing through. The car’s configuration allowed the engineers to place the intercooler air intake just behind the side windows, which in turn allowed the side air intakes to be smaller. A longer rear overhang reduces air intake from the roof area, increasing rear downforce.

While the interior of the car retains the technical identity of the F8 Tributo (with the exception of the rear window), Ferrari has gone to great lengths to achieve the perfect combination of color and trim to reflect the elegant, sporty and aggressive character of the SP48 Unica. A good example is the custom-designed laser-perforated black Alcantara used on the seats and much of the interior trim, which has flashes of iridescent reddish-orange fabric to match the body color underneath. Its motif follows the hexagonal grille motif and the roof paintwork, creating an attractive continuity between the interior and exterior of the car.

In the cockpit of the SP48 Unica, polished treadplates with the same laser-embossed hexagonal pattern draw attention, while brushed carbon fiber gives the cabin a technical, exclusive feel and is complemented by Grigio Canna di Fucile (metallic gray) accents.

Developed for a longtime customer and one of a kind, the Ferrari SP48 Unica is a bold interpretation of a sports car and skillfully underlines its racing spirit and vocation for speed, stressed Ferrari.
