So, BMW 3-series was tested on a professional sporttrac on different sets of tires, in order to find out whether it gives the advantage of wide tires compared to conventional. The results of this interesting study refuted the theory that the wide rubber due to the larger contact patch of the tread with the road giving more grip. In fact, the test showed that the wide rubber alters the contact patch, but, in fact, not always gives you the advantage of extra grip with the road surface.
